Finite arithmetic subgroups of GLn

چکیده

We discuss the following conjecture of Kitaoka: if a finite subgroup G of GLn(OK) is invariant under the action of Gal(K/Q) then it is contained in GLn(K ). Here OK is the ring of integers in a finite, Galois extension K of Q and K ab is the maximal, abelian subextension of K. Our main result reduces this conjecture to a special case of elementary abelian p−groups G. Also, we construct some new examples which negatively answer a question of Kitaoka.

Nonarithmetic superrigid groups: Counterexamples to Platonov’s conjecture

Margulis showed that “most” arithmetic groups are superrigid. Platonov conjectured, conversely, that finitely generated linear groups which are superrigid must be of “arithmetic type.” We construct counterexamples to Platonov’s Conjecture. 1. Platonov’s conjecture that rigid linear groups are aritmetic (1.1) Representation rigid groups. Let Γ be a finitely generated group. By a representation o...

Chapter 9: Applications of Local Fields

We will give some of this structure theory here: namely, we will classify the maximal compact subgroups of GLn(K) for K a nondiscrete locally compact field. This has immediate applications to the structure of finite subgroups of GLn(Q), which are of intrinsic interest and are quite useful in areas like representation theory and modular and automorphic forms. Moreover, this material (actually, a...

The Ubiquity of Thin Groups

In this article, which is an elaboration of our talk at the MSRI workshop “Thin Groups and Super Strong Approximation,” we discuss how one can approach the question of whether typical subgroups of GLn(Z) are thin. We discuss interpretations of what typical should mean, motivated by recently solved arithmetic problems involving thin groups. We give an overview of what is known about the ubiquity...

An arithmetic method of counting the subgroups of a finite abelian group

The main goal of this paper is to apply the arithmetic method developed in our previous paper [13] to determine the number of some types of subgroups of finite abelian groups.
